Mets trade John Buck and Marlon Byrd to Pittsburgh

The New York Mets today announced the club acquired minor league second baseman Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later from the Pittsburgh Pirates for catcher John Buck, outfielder Marlon Byrd and cash considerations.

Herrera, 19, has appeared in 109 games with West Virginia (A) of the South Atlantic League this season, hitting .265 (112-423) with 27 doubles, 11 home runs and 56 RBI. The 5-10, 182-pound native of Cartagena, Colombia signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pirates in 2010 and made his professional debut the next season in the Venezuelan Summer League. Herrera, who throws and hits righthanded, has hit .281 (243-864) with 21 home runs and 112 RBI in 234 minor league games.

Herrera played for the World Team in the Futures Games at Citi Field this season, lining out in his only at-bat.

Buck, 33, hit .215 (79-368) with 15 home runs and 60 RBI in 101 games for the Mets this season, while Byrd, 35, led the team in home runs (21) and RBI (71).
