Astros statement regarding minor league suspensions

HOUSTON, TX - Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow released the following statement regarding Major League Baseball's suspension today of minor league players Jose Fernandez, Michael Martinez and D'andre Toney. The three were suspended for their violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

"We were disappointed to hear the news of these suspensions. The Astros fully support the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Our minor league players undergo extensive drug prevention training, so it is very unfortunate when something like this occurs.

"Moving forward, we will continue to review our entire drug education and prevention program to identify opportunities to enhance it in order to prevent future violations."

The three players tested positive for an Amphetamine. Fernandez is on the roster of the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Astros while Martinez and Toney are on the Single-A Tri-City ValleyCats roster.
