Red Sox announce roster moves

The Boston Red Sox announced the following roster moves today:

Infielder John McDonald was added to the active major league roster.
Outfielder Quintin Berry was selected to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Daniel Bard was designated for assignment.
Right-handed pitcher Rubby De La Rosa and catcher Ryan Lavarnway were recalled from Pawtucket. Additionally, catcher Christian Vazquez had his option transferred from Double-A Portland to Pawtucket.
Infielder Brandon Snyder was activated from the 15-day disabled list.

McDonald, Berry, De La Rosa, Lavarnway, and Snyder will be active for today's 1:35 p.m. game against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcements.

McDonald, a 15-year major league veteran, will wear No. 10. The 38-year-old was acquired yesterday from the Philadelphia Phillies, along with cash considerations, in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Nefi Ogando. He has appeared in 45 games this season between the Pittsburgh Pirates (16), Cleveland Indians (8), and Philadelphia Phillies (21). Between the three clubs, he combined to hit .098 (6-for-61) with one double, one home run, and four RBI. Defensively, the native of New London, CT and current Scituate, MA resident has appeared primarily as a shortstop in his career with 575 games (429 starts) at the position. He has posted a career .972 fielding percentage at shortstop, which includes 19 games (11 starts) in 2013. In addition, he has played 210 games at second base (142 starts), 143 games at third base (66 starts), seven games in the outfield (4 starts) and pitched in one for Philadelphia this season.

Berry, 28, will wear No. 50. He was acquired from the Royals in a minor league trade on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Clayton Mortensen. The left-handed hitter has appeared in 99 games this season, all at the Triple-A level, between Detroit's Toledo affiliate (49 games), Kansas City's Omaha affiliate (48 games), and Pawtucket (two games). Between those clubs he is 61-for-316 (.193) with 10 doubles, a triple, three homers, 31 RBI, and 50 walks. He has combined to steal 30 bases in 34 attempts this season for an 88.2% success rate. Berry made his major league debut with the Tigers last year, batting .258 (75-for-291) with 10 doubles, six triples, two homers, and 29 RBI in 94 games. He was successful in all 21 stolen base attempts with Tigers in 2012 and was named the club's Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Broadcasters Association. The Royals claimed him off waivers from Detroit on June 4.

De La Rosa, 24, has made five relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2013, his first season in the organization. With Boston he has no record, a 4.76 ERA (3 ER/5.2 IP), and three strikeouts compared to one walk allowed while working out of the bullpen. He has primarily pitched for Pawtucket this season, where he was named a mid-season International League All-Star. In 24 outings for the PawSox this year, including 20 starts to begin the year, he has gone 3-3 with a 4.26 ERA (38 ER/80.1 IP) and 76 strikeouts.

Lavarnway, 26, has appeared in 19 games for the Red Sox this season, including 15 starts beghind the plate. For Boston he has hit .283 (17-for-60) with six doubles, eight RBI, and two walks. Over his last six big league games, the right-handed hitter is 8-for-20 (.400) with two doubles and four RBI. In 49 games for Pawtucket this season, he has hit .250 (44-for-176) with nine doubles, three home runs, 24 RBI, and 25 walks, and has thrown out 18 of 42 attempted base stealers (42.9%).

Snyder, 26, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 10 (retroactive to August 8) with right elbow ulnar neuritis. He went 2-for-13 (.154) in four rehab games for Pawtucket this week and is batting .261 (65-for-249) with 16 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 37 RBI, 37 runs, and 20 walks in 68 games with the PawSox in 2013 overall. Snyder has appeared in 21 games for the Red Sox this season, including 10 starts, all at third base. He is 9-for-43 (.209) with three doubles, two home runs, and seven RBI for Boston.

Bard pitched in two games for the Red Sox in April, allowing one run in 1.0 inning. The 28-year-old is 10-19 with five saves and a 3.67 ERA (105 ER/257.1 IP) in 211 career major league games, including 10 starts, all with the Red Sox from 2009-13.

With today's moves, Boston's active major league roster is now at 30.
