Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies named National League Player of the Week

Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon has been named National League Player of the Week for the period ending September 22nd. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In seven games last week, Blackmon led the Major Leagues with 18 hits and 26 total bases while tying for baseball's highest batting average with a .500 (18-for-36) mark. The lefty slugger also tied for the Major League lead in doubles (5) while slugging .722 and posting a .500 on-base percentage - good for third and fifth in the National League, respectively. Blackmon added six runs scored with five driven in during the week while hitting one home run.

Blackmon went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the opener of a four-game home series with the N.L. Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals. The Texas native drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh, plating Rockies backstop Wilin Rosario with an RBI single to knot the score at two. His RBI double in the eighth inning gave the Rockies a 4-2 lead in an eventual 6-2 victory over the Redbirds. In Thursday's matchup between the two clubs, the Georgia Tech product collected four hits as the Rockies outlasted the Cardinals for a 7-6 win in 15 innings, which earned a series split. His eighth inning double off Cards reliever Trevor Rosenthal marked his fifth straight game with a double, tying a franchise record last accomplished by Todd Helton in 2004. It marked the fourth career four-hit game for the 27-year-old, who has played in parts of three seasons with the Rockies since being selected by the organization in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft. On Friday, Blackmon clubbed his career best fifth homer of the season as the Rockies began a three-game set with the Diamondbacks at Coors Field. The solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth broke a 2-2 deadlock and paved the way to a 9-4 victory for the Rox over their N.L. West rivals. Blackmon collected back-to-back three-hit games on Saturday and Sunday against the D-backs. With 18 hits across six multi-hit performances last week, Blackmon saw his batting average jump from .289 to .311 (70-225) on the season. This is Charlie's first career Player of the Week Award.
