Wil Myers of the Tampa Bay Rays named the American League Rookie of the Month for September

Tampa Bay Rays right fielder Wil Myers has been voted the American League Rookie of the Month for September.

He becomes the second Rays rookie this season to garner the honor after fellow teammate Chris Archer took home the award (along with A.L. Pitcher of the Month) in July. Myers is the first Rays position player to win the top rookie award since teammate Evan Longoria in June 2008. Myers batted .317 (33-for-104) with 13 doubles, four homers, 14 RBI and 18 runs scored in 27 games through September 29th. The 22-year-old peppered the offensive rookie leaderboard for September (minimum 78 plate appearances), finishing first in hits, runs, doubles, extra-base hits (17) and total bases (58), tying for first in homers and ranking second in at-bats, RBI, batting average, on-base percentage (.360) and slugging percentage (.558).

On September 4th, the North Carolina native went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBI to lead the visiting Rays past the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 3-1. It was Wil's second career multi-homer game, previously notching the feat against the New York Yankees on July 28th in the Bronx. The former third round pick in the 2009 Draft (by Kansas City) put together an eight-game hitting streak between September 11th-18th, batting .387 (12-for-31) with five doubles, two homers, seven RBI and six runs scored over the stretch. With a possible Postseason berth on the line this past Sunday, Myers went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored as Tampa Bay edged the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-6, at the Rogers Centre to secure a spot in the A.L. Wild Card Tiebreaker game against the Texas Rangers in Arlington tonight.

Others rookies receiving votes included James Paxton (3-0, 1.50 ERA, 24.0 IP, 7 BB, 21 SO) of the Seattle Mariners; Josmil Pinto (.342, 26 H, 5 2B, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 10 R) of the Minnesota Twins; Dan Straily (3-1, 2.10 ERA, 30.0 IP, 13 BB, 26 SO) of the Oakland Athletics; Kole Calhoun (.306, 5 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 13 R) of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; and Brett Oberholtzer (1-4, 1.95 ERA, 2 CG, 1 SHO, 32.1 IP, 7 BB, 20 SO) of the Houston Astros.

In recognition of his American League Rookie of the Month Award, Wil Myers will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.
