Jerry Weinstein to Return to Rockies Player Development Staff

The Colorado Rockies announced today that Major League Catching Coach Jerry Weinstein has been reassigned to an undetermined role on the organization's player development staff. Rene Lachemann will assume Weinstein's duties in handling the catchers and defensive positioning for the Major League club.

"Jerry is a teacher at heart and his return to player development will allow him to impact our organization in more ways," said Rockies Executive Vice President, Chief Baseball Officer and General Manager Dan O'Dowd.

Weinstein, 69, spent the past two seasons on the Major League staff as the Rockies Catching Coach. He also took on the duties of defensive positioning for the 2013 season. Weinstein joined the organization in 2007 as the Manager of the Rockies High-A affiliate, the Modesto Nuts of the California League. Weinstein previously worked in the Los Angeles Dodgers player development department from 1999-2001 and has over 40 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level as well. 

Lachemann, 68, joined the Rockies Major League field staff in 2013 as the club's First Base Coach. Lachemann has been a coach or manager in professional baseball for over 45 years, including as a manager for all or parts of nine Major League seasons. Lachemann has managed Seattle (1981-83), Milwaukee (1984), Florida (1993-96) and the Chicago Cubs (2002). He joined the Rockies organization in 2008 as the hitting coach at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he spent five seasons (2008-12). The native of Los Angeles attended the University of Southern California and was a catcher for parts of three Major League seasons with Kansas City (1965-66) and Oakland (1968).

The remainder of the Rockies Field Staff for the 2014 season will be announced at a later date.
