A's exercise options on LHP Brett Anderson and OF Coco Crisp

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's exercised their contract options on left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson and outfielder Coco Crisp for the 2014 season, the club announced today. The A's declined to exercise their options on catcher Kurt Suzuki and outfielder Chris Young.

Anderson was the A's Opening Day starting pitcher in 2013 but finished the season in the bullpen after spending four months on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his right foot. He was 1-4 with three saves and a career-high 6.04 ERA in 16 games, including five starts. The 25-year old left-hander missed 103 games while on the DL and has missed 399 games over the last four years. Anderson signed a four-year contract through the 2013 season with club options for 2014 and 2015 on April 16, 2010.

Crisp hit a career-high 22 home runs and stole 21 bases to become the 10th player in Athletics history with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season. He also had career highs in runs (93) and walks (61) while batting .261 in 131 games. The switch hitter, who turns 34 today, led the majors and tied for third in Athletics history in home runs batting leadoff. He also went errorless in 110 games in the outfield and led Major League outfielders with 3.03 total chances per nine innings. Crisp ranks second on the Oakland career list in leadoff home runs (11) and is sixth in stolen bases (141). He agreed to terms on a two-year contract with a club option for 2014 on Jan. 5, 2012.

Suzuki returned to the A's following an Aug. 23 trade with Washington and batted .303 with two home runs and seven RBI in 15 games with Oakland. He also hit .222 with three home runs and 25 RBI in 79 games with the Nationals for a .232 average in 94 games overall. The 30-year old right-handed hitter was originally drafted by the A's and signed a four-year contract through 2013 with a club option for 2014 on July 23, 2010. Suzuki was traded by the A's to the Nationals Aug. 3, 2012.

Young hit .200 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 107 games in his first season with the A's in 2013. The batting average was second lowest in the American League and fourth lowest in the majors among players with 350 or more plate appearances. Young was acquired from Arizona Oct. 20, 2012 for Cliff Pennington and Yordy Cabrera. He was in the fifth year of a five-year contract with a club option for 2014.
