Tigers decline 2014 option on Jose Veras

Darin Downs claimed off waivers by Houston; Matt Tuiasosopo claimed off waivers by Arizona

DETROIT- The Detroit Tigers today announced the club will decline its option for the 2014 season on righthanded pitcher Jose Veras. Additionally, the Tigers today announced lefthanded pitcher Darin Downs has been claimed off waivers by the Houston Astros and infielder/outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo has been claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Veras was acquired by the Tigers from the Houston Astros on July 29th. He appeared in 25 games for the Tigers, posting an 0-1 record, 3.20 ERA (19.2IP/7ER) and 16 strikeouts. He limited opponents to a .213 batting average (16x75) with the Tigers. He compiled a 3.60 ERA (5.0IP/2ER) and nine strikeouts for the Tigers during the postseason.

Downs appeared in 29 games for the Tigers this season, posting an 0-2 record, 4.84 ERA (35.1IP/19ER) and 37 strikeouts. He limited opponents to a .265 batting average (36x136) in 2013.  

Tuiasosopo saw action in 81 games for the Tigers this season, batting .244 (40x164) with seven doubles, seven home runs and 30 RBI.

The Tigers today also reinstated infielder Danny Worth from the 60-day disabled list.
