Angels add Gary Disarcina to 2014 coaching staff

ANAHEIM, CA - The Angels Tuesday announced Gary DiSarcina will return to the organization as the club's third base coach in 2014. The announcement was made by General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

"After working with Gary during the 2012 season and getting to know him personally and professionally, I do not think there is a better solution for the position on our staff," said Dipoto. "With his lineage to this organization, the relationships he has with so many personnel past and present, and his knowledge of our organization overall, his addition is advantageous on so many levels. Like Don (Baylor), there is a pride and loyalty factor to the Angels Gary has maintained through the years."

DiSarcina, 45, returns to the Angels where he spent his entire 12-year playing career (1989-2000). A former 6th round draft pick of the Halos in 1988, DiSarcina would go on to play in 1,086 games for the club, tied for seventh most in franchise history, and 1,069 contests at shortstop (third in club annals). The 1995 All-Star and 1998 Angels Team MVP amassed a .258 (966/3744) average over the course of his career with 186 doubles, 20 triples, 28 home runs, 355 RBI and 444 runs scored.

DiSarcina returns to the Angels after spending 2013 as the manager of Boston's Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox. With DiSarcina at the helm, the PawSox went 80-63 (.559) to claim the International League North division title and advanced to the championship series before falling to Durham in four games.

2014 will mark DiSarcina's first coaching position at the Major League level. The Billerica, MA native spent the 2012 season working as the Angels Field Coordinator following his initial return to the Angels family as Special Assistant to the General Manager in 2011. Prior to his stint with the Angels, he spent 2006-2010 with the Red Sox organization in various capacities. In 2010, he served as infield coordinator following three seasons as manager of the Single-A Lowell Spinders. Combined with 2013, DiSarcina has a compiled a 205-162 (.559) managerial record at the minor league level along with three division titles (2008, 2009 & 2013). He was originally hired by the Red Sox as a Baseball Operations consultant in November of 2006.

After retiring as an active player, he operated the DiSarcina Baseball Academy in Billerica and served as a NESN analyst for Red Sox games. He also served on the coaching staff from Team Italy in the 2006 World Baseball Classic.

DiSarcina resides in Plymouth, MA and has two children, Carlee and Gary Jr.
