D-backs to host Science of Baseball Camp in Tucson tomorrow

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation will host a Science of Baseball Camp in Tucson for underprivileged students tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kino Sports Complex. The camp will teach 50 kids from the Tucson Unified School District and Flowing Wells Unified School District about the rules of baseball and how baseball can be applied using Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Throughout the day, D-backs Baseball Academy coaching staff and volunteers will instruct students on how to find Paul Goldschmidt’s batting average, aerodynamics of throwing a baseball, the trajectory of ball flight as well as throwing and hitting mechanics. The students will be provided with a lunch that also includes a nutrition activity. After lunch, the students will learn from three stations that include reaction time (statistics activity), elasticity and sweet spot (algebra activity) and ball flight trajectory (geometry activity). The camp will conclude with a scrimmage between the students led by D-backs Baseball Academy coaches.
