Marlins acquire Carter Capps from Seattle Mariners

MIAMI - The Miami Marlins today announced that the Club has acquired right-handed relief pitcher Carter Capps from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for first baseman Logan Morrison. The announcement was made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.

Capps, 23, appeared in 71 games for Seattle after making his Major League debut on August 3, 2012. He registered a 3.96 ERA (25.0 IP/11 ER) in 18 games during the 2012 season, and a 5.49 mark (59.0/36) in 53 games last season, with 66 strikeouts and a 3-3 record.

He averaged 10.07 strikeouts per 9.0 innings last season, which ranked second among American League rookie relievers, while his total of 66 punch outs was the seventh highest mark by a rookie in Mariners history. Capps also ranked fourth among AL rookie relievers in appearances, fifth in holds (9) and seventh in innings pitched. Additionally, he stranded 24-of-29 inherited runners (82.8 percent), which was the ninth-best mark in the American League (min. 25 IR).

Capps was a third-round supplemental selection of the Mariners in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. He is a native of Kinston, North Carolina, and was drafted out of Mount Olive College (NC). Capps was named the Division II National Pitcher of the Year for 2011 and the Conference Carolinas Male Athlete of the Year for 2010-11 after going 14-1 with two saves and a 1.75 ERA (118.0/23) in 20 games (15 starts). From 2010-11, he set an NCAA Division II record with 24 straight wins.
