A's agree to terms with RHP Jim Johnson on one-year contract

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A's agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Jim Johnson on a one-year contract for the 2014 season, the club announced today.

Johnson was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles December 2 for infielder Jemile Weeks and minor league catcher David Freitas after tying for the Major League lead with 50 saves in 2013. It was his second consecutive season leading the majors in saves as he had 51 in 2012. He is one of just two pitchers to lead the majors in saves in back-to-back seasons, along with Rollie Fingers (1977-78). The 30-year old right-hander was 3-8 with a 2.94 ERA in a career-high 74 appearances last year. Johnson racked up 122 saves in 360 games in parts of eight seasons with Baltimore from 2006-13 and leaves the Orioles ranked second on their career saves list.

Johnson was one of six arbitration eligible players on the A's roster. The remaining five include Craig Gentry, Luke Gregerson, Jed Lowrie, Brandon Moss and Josh Reddick.
