Tigers agree to 2014 contracts with five players

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to 2014 contracts with righthanded pitchers Al Alburquerque, Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer, and outfielders Andy Dirks and Austin Jackson. The club has avoided arbitration with each of the five players.

Alburquerque appeared in 53 games with the Tigers in 2013, posting a 4-3 record and 4.59 ERA (49.0IP/25ER).

Porcello started 29 games with Detroit during the 2013 season, compiling a 13-8 record and 4.32 ERA (177.0IP/85ER). He established a career high with 142 strikeouts in 2013.

Scherzer started 32 games with the Tigers in 2013, compiling a 21-3 record and 2.90 ERA (214.1IP/69ER). He was named the 2013 American League Cy Young Award Winner in voting conducted by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He led the American League with 21 wins and an .875 winning percentage, while he was second with 240 strikeouts, 10.08 strikeouts per nine innings, 25 quality starts, and a .198 batting average against, fifth with a 2.90 ERA, and tied for fifth with 214.1 innings pitched.

Dirks hit .256 (112x438) with 16 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 37 RBI in 131 games with the Tigers in 2013.

Jackson batted .272 (150x552) with 30 doubles, seven triples, 12 home runs, 49 RBI and eight stolen bases in 129 games with Detroit in 2013.
