RHP Yu Darvish activated from 15-day disabled list

RHP Nick Martinez optioned to Frisco

St. Petersburg, Florida - The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has activated RHP Yu Darvish from the 15-day disabled list. Darvish will make his 2014 debut in a start versus the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday at Tropicana Field.

To make room for Martinez, RHP Nick Martinez has been optioned to Double-A Frisco of the Texas League

Sunday will be Darvish's first outing since March 16 in a spring training game versus the White Sox as he was sidelined the remainder of the spring with neck stiffness. He was placed on the 15-day DL on March 31, retroactive to March 21. He resumed a throwing program on March 29 and had an 86-pitch simulated bullpen session that was the equivalent of four innings on Tuesday.

Darvish went 2-0 with a 3.68 ERA (6 ER/14.2 IP) over 4 A game starts this spring. He was 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA and a major league high 277 strikeouts in 32 starts in 2013.

Martinez did not receive a decision in his major league debut versus Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing three runs in 6.0 innings and departing in line for the win in a Texas 5-4 loss. He had his contract purchased from Frisco on Saturday.

With today's moves, the Rangers major league roster remains at the 40-man limit.
