White Sox purchase contract of Zach Putman from Class AAA Charlotte; designate Donnie Veal for assignment

CHICAGO - Prior to tonight's game vs. Boston, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Zach Putnam from Class AAA Charlotte and designated left-hander Donnie Veal for assignment.

Putnam, 26, has gone 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (6.0 IP) and 11 strikeouts in four relief appearances with Charlotte in 2014. He allowed just one walk and was holding opponents to a .182 (4-22) average.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Putnam has pitched in 15 games (all in relief) over parts of three major-league seasons with Cleveland (2011), Colorado (2012) and the Cubs (2013), going 1-1 with an 8.53 ERA (12 ER/12.2 IP) and 13 strikeouts.

Putnam, who will wear uniform No. 57, was signed by the White Sox as a free agent on November 27, 2013.

Veal, 29, went 0-0 with a 7.50 ERA (5 ER/6.0 IP), seven walks and six strikeouts in seven relief appearances with the Sox this season.
