Akron INF Giovanny Urshela named Indians Minor League Player of the Week

The Cleveland Indians today announced that Double-A Akron INF GIOVANNY URSHELA has been named Indians Minor League Player of the Week for April 14-20. The Indians Player of the Week Award recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday through the end of the Minor League season.

Urshela, 22, hit .353 (6-17) with a home run, 9 RBI and a .950 OPS (.421 OBP/.529 SLG) in 5 games throughout the week. He had back-to-back multi-hit performances on April 17 & 18 at Bowie, including a game-winning, 2-run single in the top of the 8th on Thursday. Urshela owns 6 multi-hit games this year and currently leads the RubberDucks with 17 hits on the season. The 6-foot, 197-pound third baseman also leads the RubberDucks with 3 home runs, 4 doubles, 30 total bases and 10 runs scored, and ranks second among all Indians farmhands with 12 RBI.

The Cartagena, Colombia native originally signed with the Indians as a non-drafted free agent on July 7, 2008 and entered the 2014 campaign with a .264 career minor league average over 5 seasons in the Indians system. Was Akron's primary third baseman in 2013, hitting .270 (120-445) with 8 home runs and 43 RBI in 116 games.
