White Sox place Chris Sale on the 15-day disabled list; recall Charlie Leesman from Class AAA Charlotte

DETROIT - Prior to tonight's game at Detroit, the Chicago White Sox placed left-handed pitcher Chris Sale on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 18) with a flexor muscle strain in his left arm and recalled left-hander Charlie Leesman from Class AAA Charlotte.

Leesman, 27, has gone 0-2 with a 1.59 ERA (3 ER/17.0 IP) and 11 strikeouts in three starts with the Knights this season. He lost his last start on April 17 vs. Gwinnett despite allowing one unearned run on four hits over 7.0 IP.

Leesman, 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, made eight appearances (one start) with the White Sox in 2013, going 0-0 with a 7.04 ERA (12 ER/15.1 IP). His only start came in his major-league debut in game one of a doubleheader on August 9 vs. Minnesota when he allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over 5.0 IP of a no decision. His eight strikeouts were the most by a Sox pitcher in his major-league debut since Ravelo Manzanillo also struck out eight on September 25, 1988 vs. Seattle.

Sale, 25, is 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA (7 ER/27.1 IP) and 29 strikeouts in four starts this season. He has limited opponents to a .168 (16-95) average, with left-handers going 0-20.
