Cubs place RHP Jose Veras on 15-day disabled list, recall RHP Brian Schlitter from Triple-A Iowa

MILWAUKEE - The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Jose Veras on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 25) with a left oblique strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Brian Schlitter from Triple-A Iowa.

Schlitter wears uniform number 63 and is available for tonight's game against the Brewers at Miller Park.

Schlitter, 28, begins his second stint with the Cubs after he made his first career Opening Day roster and posted a 6.35 ERA (4 ER/5.2 IP) in six relief appearances for Chicago. He held opponents to a .150 batting average (3-for-20) and allowed one run in his first five outings (5.0 IP) before surrendering three runs in 0.2 innings, April 10 vs. Pittsburgh.

Optioned to Iowa, April 12, Schlitter has recorded three saves while pitching to a 3.60 ERA (2 ER/5.0 IP) in four games at Triple-A.

Schlitter, who made his major league debut during a seven-game stint with the Cubs in 2010, is 11-24 with 81 saves and a 3.00 ERA (109 ER/327.1 IP) in 262 career minor league relief appearances since he was originally selected by the Phillies in the 16th round of the 2007 draft. He was acquired by the Cubs from Philadelphia, August 7, 2008 for left-handed pitcher Scott Eyre.

Veras, 33, has no record and a 15.88 ERA (10 ER/5.2 IP) in six relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
