Cubs place RHP Pedro Strop on 15-day DL, recall LHP Zac Rosscup from Triple-A

CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Pedro Strop on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain and recalled left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa.

Rosscup, 25, begins his third stint with the Cubs this season having thrown 2.2-scoreless innings in two relief appearances thus far. He served as the 26th man in the second game of a doubleheader April 16 at Yankee Stadium and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. He was recalled once more, April 24, and tossed a scoreless inning, April 29 in Cincinnati, before he was optioned to Iowa, May 3.

With Iowa this season, Rosscup is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA (3 ER/9.0 IP) in seven relief appearances. He has struck out 12 in 9.0 innings, walked five and held the opponent to a .156 batting average (5-for-32).

Rosscup made his major league debut as a September call-up last season, posting a 1.35 ERA (1 ER/6.2 IP) with no record in 10 relief appearances. He spent the majority of last season between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa, where he combined to go 2-2 with three saves and a 2.12 ERA (12 ER/51.0 IP) in 46 relief appearances. He struck out 83 batters in 51.0 innings for an average of 14.6 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

Rosscup was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 28th round of the 2009 Draft. The Clackamas, Ore., native was acquired by the Cubs as part of the eight-player trade that brought Matt Garza to Chicago on January 8, 2011.

Strop, 28, is 0-2 with one save and a 4.97 ERA (7 ER/12.2 IP) in 15 relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
