Padres acquire OF Jake Goebbert and PTBNL and/or cash from Oakland Athletics in exchange for INF/OF Kyle Blanks

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named later and/or cash considerations from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for infielder/outfielder Kyle Blanks. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Goebbert, 26, has hit .257 (28-for-109) with seven doubles, one triple, six home runs, 25 RBI and 21 runs scored in 31 games for Triple-A Sacramento this season. Originally signed by Houston as a 13th-round selection in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Northwestern University, the left-handed hitter has hit .278 (602-for-2163) with 140 doubles, 20 triples, 59 home runs, 343 RBI, 338 runs scored and 33 stolen bases in 613 games across parts of six minor league seasons with the Astros (2009-2012) and Athletics (2013-14) organizations. Goebbert will be assigned to Triple-A El Paso.

Blanks, 27, hit .200 (2-for-10) with a run scored in five games for San Diego this season. In 27 games for Triple-A El Paso, he hit .265 (22-for-83) with five doubles, nine home runs, 20 RBI and 15 runs scored. The right-handed hitter began the season with El Paso and was recalled by the Padres on May 5. Originally signed by the Padres as a 42nd-round selection in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Blanks has hit .228 (163-for-715) with 36 doubles, two triples, 28 home runs, 98 RBI and 91 runs scored in 239 games across six Major League seasons, all with the Padres (2009-14).
