Pirates claim pitcher Josh Wall from Angels

The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed right-handed pitcher Josh Wall off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Wall will be optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room for Wall on the 40-man roster, the Pirates have designated for assignment right-handed pitcher Phil Irwin. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 27-year-old Wall spent a majority of the 2014 campaign with Triple-A Salt Lake, where he went 0-0 with one save and a 4.22 ERA (10.2ip/5er) in eight relief appearances. He also made two relief appearances this season with the Angels.

Wall was originally selected by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft before being acquired in a trade by Miami on July 6, 2013. He was then claimed off waivers by the Angels from Miami on October 4, 2013.

Wall made his Major League debut in 2012 with the Dodgers and posted a 1-0 record and 4.76 ERA (5.2ip/3er) in seven relief appearances in three separate stints with Los Angeles. He also led all Dodgers farmhands and the Pacific Coast League with 28 saves during the 2012 campaign.
