2014 Houston Astros First-Year Player Draft Information

HOUSTON SELECTIONS (DAY 1-2): The Houston Astros have selected 11 players through the first two days of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. To date, the Astros have selected five right-handed pitchers, two left-handed pitchers, two infielders and two outfielders.

The Astros selected nine of their 11 draft picks out of the collegiate ranks.

Today's portion of the draft included rounds 3-10 out of a scheduled 40. The final day of the draft will resume tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m. CT and will include rounds 11-40.

COLLEGIATE RANKS: Over their first 11 selections in the first 10 rounds, the Astros selected nine college players. The last time Houston selected at least nine college players within the first 10 rounds of the draft was in 2001, when Houston's first 17 selections were all out of college. That draft produced eight Major Leaguers, including RHP Matt Albers (23rd round), RHP Kirk Saarloos (3rd round) and IF Chris Burke (1st round).

HOUSTON TIES: The Astros selected right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden out of Texas A&M with the first pick in the fourth round. Mengden, 21, is a junior at A&M and is originally from Houston, where he attended Westside High School in nearby Katy, TX. Mengden played one season (2013) at the Houston College Classic, which is held at Minute Maid Park. In his start at the venue on March 2, 2013, Mengden beat Rice by tossing 8.0 innings, while allowing three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts.

ASTROS SELECT AIKEN, FISHER, REED ON FIRST NIGHT OF DRAFT:

Last night, the Astros selected three players on the first night of the 2014 Major League First-Year Player Draft, including left-handed pitcher Brady Aiken with the first-overall pick.

With their second and third selections last night, Houston chose a pair of collegiate hitters in outfielder Derek Fisher and first baseman A.J. Reed.

Aiken, 17, posted a 7-0 record and a 1.06 ERA in 11 starts in his senior season at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, CA. He was a 2014 Perfect Game 1st Team All-American and an All Region 1st Teamer in California.

Fisher, 20, is hitting .288 (40x139) with seven doubles and 23 RBI in 35 games with Virginia this season. A combination of power and speed, Fisher owns a career .290 (163x563) batting average with 30 doubles, 12 triples, 17 home runs and 121 RBI in his three seasons (2012-14) at Virginia.

Reed, 21, a junior at Kentucky, leads the NCAA in home runs (23), slugging (.735) and OPS (1.211). He also hit .336 (75x223) this season with 18 doubles, 73 RBI and a .476 on-base percentage. Reed walked 49 times this season and struck out just 48 times.
