Play Sun Smart Events Planned for Sunday

Skin Cancer Awareness Highlighted at Yankees-Royals Game

KANSAS CITY, MO (June 7, 2014) - The Kansas City Royals will partner with Major League Baseball, the American Academy of Dermatology and The University of Kansas Hospital for the annual Play Sun Smart campaign during the game against the New York Yankees on Sunday, June 8.

As part of the awareness campaign, fans can learn about skin cancer prevention, symptoms and treatment from skin cancer experts at Gate D of Kauffman Stadium and receive a free "Outpacing Melanoma" bracelet prior to the game. Fans are also encouraged to visit www.royals.com/playsunsmart for tips on how to stay safe in the sun.

The family of late Royals Hall of Famer pitcher Paul Splittorff will be honored in the Buck O'Neil Legacy Seat for their efforts towards skin cancer prevention. Splittorff, who holds the club record for wins (166), starts (392) and innings pitched (2,554.2), died from complications of melanoma in May 2011.

In addition, area youth from the RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) program will deliver sunscreen to Royals and Yankees players in the dugout prior to the game. A special pregame presentation will recognize survivors, including melanoma patient Grant Bowerman who will throw the ceremonial first pitch to Dr. Josh Mammen of The University of Kansas Hospital, and highlight sun safety tips.
