Padres conclude 2014 First-Year Player Draft by selecting 30 players on third day
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today selected 30 players on the third and final day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft today.
During the three-day First Year Player Draft, the Padres drafted three catchers, seven infielders (1 2B, 2 3B, 4 SS) and five outfielders. San Diego selected shortstop Trea Turner from North Carolina State (13th overall) with their first pick the 2014 draft. Of the 15 position players selected, three are left-handed hitters and one is a left-handed thrower. Overall, San Diego selected 31 college players and nine high school players. The Friars took position players with five of the first six picks and later selected a pitcher in 13 consecutive rounds (Rounds 14-26).
San Diego selected 25 pitchers in the draft, including 20 of their final 26 picks. The Padres selected 15 right-handed pitchers and 10 left-handed pitchers. RHP Zech Lemond (3rd round) from Rice University was the first college pitcher selected by the Padres, while right-handed pitcher Justin Lewis (19th round) from Greater Atlanta Christian High School (GA) was the first high school pitcher drafted by San Diego. In all, 20 of the 25 pitchers selected by San Diego were college pitchers.
In all San Diego selected players from 20 states: Alabama (1), California (5), Florida (4), Georgia (2), Indiana (3), Kentucky (1), Maryland (1), Mississippi (1), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (2), Pennsylvania (2), South Carolina (2), Tennessee (3), Texas (3), Utah (1), Virginia (1), Washington (1). In addition to the 39 players in the United States, the Padres also selected one player from Canada.
Padres 18th round pick Maxwell MacNabb attended the University of San Diego and grew up in Encinitas, California, attending La Costa Canyon High School. The left-handed pitcher, who was primarily used out of the bullpen for the Toreros, played four seasons for San Diego and accumulated a career 11-7 record with a 4.55 ERA.
Friars 23rd round pick Jason Jester out of Texas A&M University was also selected by the Padres in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft in the 30th round.
Padres 28th round pick Johnny Manziel was the 2012 recipient of the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding player in college football, as the quarterback at Texas A&M University. The 21 year-old shortstop was selected 22nd-overall in the 2014 NFL Draft and is the ninth player to both win the Heisman Trophy and be selected in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.
Padres 35th round pick RHP Cobi Johnson is the son of longtime Blue Jays minor league pitching coordinator, Dane Johnson.
The Padres selected eight players (rounds 3-10) on Friday after making two selections on Thursday, the first day of the First Year Player draft.
