Rockies Select The Contract Of RHP Christian Bergman, Recall Rhp Chad Bettis From Triple-A

DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Christian Bergman and recalled RHP Chad Bettis from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Additionally, the club has placed outfielder Michael Cuddyer (left shoulder strain) and right-handed pitcher Eddie Butler (right rotator cuff inflammation) on the 15-day disabled list retroactively to June 6 and June 7, respectively. To create room on the 40-man roster for Bergman, the club has designated right-handed pitcher Wilton Lopez for assignment. Bergman (#36), who is scheduled to start, and Bettis (#35) will be available for the Rockies tonight against the Braves at Coors Field (6:40 p.m. MDT).

Bergman, 26, will make his Major League debut tonight becoming the fourth Rockies pitcher to make his MLB debut this season. He opened up the 2014 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs after attending his first Major League Spring Training and has gone 4-4 with a 3.84 ERA (75.0 ip, 32 er) with 14 walks and 48 strikeouts in 12 starts. In 5 home starts for the Sky Sox, Bergman is 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA (35.1 ip, 8 er), five walks and 21 strikeouts. Bergman broke the Sky Sox record with 26.2 consecutive scoreless innings at home, reeling off three straight starts (5/3-19) allowing no runs in 8.0 innings in each start. The Rockies 24th round pick of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft is 36-25 with a 3.60 ERA (554.1 ip, 222 er), 541 hits, 96 walks and 385 strikeouts in 95 career minor league games with 86 starts.

Bettis, 25, is making his third stint with Colorado after beginning the season on the Rockies Opening Day roster for the first time in his career. Since being optioned from Colorado to Colorado Springs on May 3, Bettis has appeared in 10 games and has gone 2-1 with 2 saves and a 1.83 ERA (19.2 ip, 4 er), with each of his last 9 appearances being 2.0 innings or longer. In 12 Major League games this season, Bettis has gone 0-1 with an 8.78 ERA (13.1 ip, 13 er). In 28 career Major League games, including eight starts, Bettis is 1-4 with a 6.36 ERA (58.0 ip, 41 er), 24 walks and 37 strikeouts. The 6-foot-1 right-hander was originally drafted by Colorado in the second round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas Tech University.

Cuddyer, 35, will be making his second stint on the disabled list. This year, Cuddyer has hit .317 (38-for-120) with seven doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI and 16 runs in 31 games. Last season, Cuddyer became the sixth Rockie to win a National League batting title and set career highs in batting average (.331, 162-for-489), on-base percentage (.389), slugging (.530), and OPS (.919). He was selected to the All-Star team for the second time (2011 with Minnesota) and participated in the Home Run Derby for the first time. The Norfolk, VA native has played in 1,401 career games hitting .278 (1399-for-5039) with 307 doubles, 40 triples, 182 home runs, 738 RBI and 749 runs.

Butler, 23, made his Major League debut on Friday, June 6 against the Los Angeles Dodgers becoming the third Rockies pitcher to make his MLB debut this season. He went 5.1 innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and three walks while earning the loss. Eddie began the year at Double-A Tulsa, making 11 starts for the Drillers and owning a 4-4 record with a 2.49 ERA (68.2 ip, 19 er), 40 strikeouts and 19 walks. In his minor league career, he is 20-10 with 2.05 ERA (286.0 ip, 65), 238 strikeouts and 84 walks in 52 games (51 starts).

Lopez, 30, opened the year on the Rockies Opening Day roster before being optioned on April 9. In 17 games for Triple-A Colorado Springs he has gone 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA (29.0 ip, 15 er). Over six seasons with the Houston Astros (2009-12) and Colorado Rockies (2013-14) he has appeared in 292 Major League games with two starts. He has gone 16-17 with 11 saves and a 3.54 ERA (305.1 ip, 120 er), 337 hits, 57 walks and 221 strikeouts.

The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
