D-backs statement on the passing of former pitching coach Bob Welch

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) released the following statement today from President & CEO Derrick Hall on the passing of Bob Welch. Welch served as the pitching coach for the D-backs' 2001 World Championship team following a 17-year Major League playing career with the Dodgers and Athletics.

"This is a tragic and sad day, as Bob Welch will be remembered by everyone who knew him as a great teammate and a great friend. Though he was on our Major League coaching staff for just one season, it was certainly memorable, as he guided our pitching staff to a World Championship and will always be a part of our history. Not only did he have a distinguished playing career, but as a coach at Arizona State University and then with the D-backs, he impacted many people's lives in a positive way and he will truly be missed."

Welch played on five teams that reached the World Series (1978, 1981, 1988, 1989 and 1990), winning two titles in 1981 and 1990. His was the American League Cy Young Award winner in 1990, when he won 27 games, tying him with Steve Carlton (1972) for the most in a single season since Denny McLain's 31 victories in 1968.
