Red Sox activate left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront from 15-day disabled list

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today activated left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, third baseman Garin Cecchini was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following last night's game. Doubront is scheduled to start for the Red Sox tonight against the Oakland Athletics at the O.co Coliseum beginning at 10:05 p.m. EDT.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Doubront, 26, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 21 with a left shoulder strain. In three rehab starts, including one with Double-A Portland and two with Pawtucket, he combined for no record and a 2.63 ERA (4 ER/13.2 IP) with 10 hits allowed, 15 strikeouts, and five walks. He last pitched on Sunday for the PawSox and fanned 10 batters over 5.0 innings without allowing a hit or a run against the White Sox' Charlotte affiliate. In nine starts this season, the left-hander has gone 2-4 with a 5.12 ERA (26 ER/45.2 IP) and 31 strikeouts. Signed by Boston as an international free agent in 2004, Doubront owns a 26-22 record with a 4.67 ERA and 366 strikeouts in 404.1 career innings over 90 major league games (68 starts) from 2010-14.

Cecchini, 23, did not appear in a game after being recalled to Boston for his second career major league stint on Tuesday. The left-handed hitter returns to Pawtucket, where he has hit .263 with a club-leading 56 hits in 213 at-bats, with eight doubles, two triples, and 24 RBI in 62 games at Pawtucket this year. He tops current PawSox qualifiers with a .344 on-base percentage and posted the league's longest on-base streak of the season, reaching in 29 consecutive games from April 18-May 22. An All-Star in each of his first three minor league seasons (2011-13), he made his major league debut for Boston on June 1 against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park, and connected for an RBI double in his second at-bat for his first major league hit.
