INF Joey Wendle named Indians Minor League Player of the Week
CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced that Double-A Akron INF JOEY WENDLE has been named Indians Minor League Player of the Week for June 16-22. The Indians Player of the Week Award recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday through the end of the Minor League season.
Wendle, 24, hit .346 (9-26) with 3 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs and a 1.140 OPS (.370 OBP/.769 SLG) in 6 games for the RubberDucks this week. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound second baseman collected a season-high 4 hits (4-6, 3 RBI) in Akron's 15-10 win at Reading on Tuesday, and led all RubberDucks batters with 7 RBI during the week. Over his last 10 games, Wendle has gone 14-36 (.389) with 11 RBI and leads the RubberDucks with 18 doubles, 8 home runs and 44 RBI on the season.
In 2013, Wendle was the recipient of the Lou Boudreau Award which recognizes the club's top minor league player of the season. He spent the entire season at Single-A Advanced Carolina where he hit .295 (122-413) with 32 doubles, 5 triples, 64 RBI and an .895 OPS (.372 SLG/.513 SLG). Wendle also hit 16 home runs which was just one shy of tops in the entire Indians Minor League System. The Wilmington, DE native was originally selected by the Indians in the 6th round (203rd overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
