Columbus CA Roberto Perez named Tribe minor league player of the week

CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced that Triple-A Columbus CA ROBERTO PEREZ has been named Indians Minor League Player of the Week for June 23-29. The Indians Player of the Week Award recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday through the end of the Minor League season.

Perez, 25, hit .316 (6-19) with a double, one home run, 3 RBI and a .918 OPS (.391 OBP/.526 SLG) in 5 games for the Clippers this week. The 5-foot-11, 225-pound catcher has hit safely in 8-straight games dating back to a 3-hit performance on June 21 at Lehigh Valley. Over the course of his recent tear, the Clippers backstop is batting .357 (10-28) with 8 RBI and a 1.139 OPS (.424 OBP/.714 SLG). Perez collected 5 RBI in the Clippers 10-1 win vs. Louisville last night, and is batting .447 (21-47) with RISP on the season. Perez leads the Clippers with a .325 (51-157) average and overtook Jesus Aguilar for the team lead with 40 RBI after his 5-RBI effort last night. The Mayaguez, PR native hit safely in each of his first 13 games to begin the 2014 campaign (.421, 16-38, 3 HR, 9 RBI), the longest hitting streak for any Columbus batter this season.

Originally selected by the Indians in the 33rd round (1,011 overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Lake City Community College in Lake City, Florida, Perez was extended a non-roster invite to Major League spring training camp in 2014 after batting a combined .200 (56-280) with 18 doubles, 2 home runs and 34 RBI in 99 games between AA Akron and Triple-A Columbus in 2013.
