Beckett and Kershaw no-hitter commemorative pin giveaways announced for September 1 and September 22
LOS ANGELES - The Dodgers announced today that the club will commemorate Josh Beckett's May 25 no-hitter and Clayton Kershaw's June 18 no-hitter with two commemorative pin giveaways set for September 1 (vs. WSH, 5:10 p.m.) and September 22 (vs. SF, 7:10 p.m.). The first 40,000 fans in attendance on September 1 will receive a Beckett no-hitter commemorative pin and the first 40,000 fans in attendance on September 22 will receive a Clayton Kershaw no-hitter commemorative pin. Beckett's May 25 no-hitter at Philadelphia was the first of his career and the 21st in Dodger franchise history. Beckett joined Randy Johnson, Dave Stewart, Jack Morris, Bret Saberhagen, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Lew Burdette and Don Larsen as the only pitchers in MLB history to be selected World Series MVP and throw a no-hitter. Beckett, a three-time All-Star, is having a career year and ranks among the NL leaders in ERA (2.26, 3rd), opponents' batting average (.203, 3rd) and WHIP (1.03, 3rd), while posting a 6-5 record in 17 starts.
On June 18, Kershaw joined Beckett as the second member of the Dodgers rotation to throw a no-hitter this season, blanking the visiting Colorado Rockies while fanning 15 in an 8-0 win. It was the 22nd no-hitter in Dodger franchise history and the 12th in Los Angeles history. Kershaw, National League Pitcher of the Month for June, was recently selected to his fourth consecutive All-Star team. Kershaw extended his scoreless streak to 36.0 with 8.0 innings of two-hit ball July 4 and won his seventh consecutive start, improving to 7-0 with a 0.69 ERA (4 ER/52.0 IP) in seven starts since June 2.
This marks the second time in franchise history that the Dodgers have had two pitchers throw no-hitters in the same season. The feat was also accomplished by the 1956 Brooklyn club with no-hitters by Carl Erskine vs. NY Giants (May 12, 1956) and Sal Maglie vs. Philadelphia (Sept. 25, 1956).
