Fernando Rodney named to American League All-Star team

Seattle closer replaces former teammate David Price on active roster

American League All-Star manager John Farrell of the Boston Red Sox announced today, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, that Seattle Mariners closer Fernando Rodney will replace David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays on the A.L.'s active roster for the 85th All-Star Game.

Price, a four-time All-Star who was selected this year by Farrell, will be inactive in the All-Star Game but is invited to attend with full All-Star honors. Rodney, 37, is now a two-time All-Star. He and Price, who were then Rays teammates, both represented the A.L. in the 2012 Midsummer Classic. In his first year in the Pacific Northwest, Rodney has posted a 1.98 ERA and an A.L-leading 27 saves in 37 games. The Dominican Republic native has struck out 42 batters in 36.1 innings (29 H, 12 BB). Rodney joins teammates Felix Hernandez, Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager on the A.L.'s active roster.

The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15th. The 85th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
