Cubs add LHP Felix Doubront to roster, place on D.L., recall RHP Blake Parker from Triple-A, select infielder Chris Valaika from Triple-A

LOS ANGELES - The Chicago Cubs added left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront to the roster and today placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain. To replace Doubront on the 25-man roster, the Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Blake Parker from Triple-A. Additionally, the club has selected the contract of infielder Chris Valaika.

Both Parker and Valaika, who will wear uniform No. 4, will be available for the Cubs tonight against Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.

Parker, 29, had been optioned to Iowa Wednesday and today begins his fifth stint with the Cubs this year. He is 1-0 with a 5.59 ERA (6 ER/9.2 IP) in seven big league outings. In parts of three major league seasons since making his debut with the Cubs in 2012, Parker is 2-2 with one save and a 3.48 ERA (24 ER/62.0 IP) in 63 relief appearances. 

Parker has no record and 21 saves with a 1.29 ERA (4 ER/28.0 IP) in 28 games for Iowa this season. He has limited the opponent to a .206 batting average, walked nine and struck out 40, good for an average of 12.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. His 21 saves lead all of Triple-A baseball.

Doubront, 26, was acquired from the Red Sox Wednesday for a player to be named. The lefthander is 26-22 with three saves and a 4.82 ERA (224 ER/418.0 IP) in 98 big league outings (69 starts) in the last five years with the Red Sox. Doubront began 2014 in Boston's rotation and went 2-3 record with a 4.54 ERA (21 ER/41.2 IP) in eight starts through May 14 but was placed on the disabled list a week later with a left shoulder strain. He pitched mostly in relief upon his return and finished 2-4 with a 6.07 ERA (40 ER/59.1 IP) in 17 appearances (10 starts) this year with Boston.

Valaika, 28, joins the Cubs for the first time this season. The right-handed batter and thrower has seen action in 55 big league games covering three years with the Cincinnati Reds (2010-11) and Miami Marlins (2013) and is a career .244 hitter (31-for-127) with two home runs and 11 RBI. Valaika has seen major league action at second base (20 games), shortstop (nine games), third base (nine games) and first base (three games).

In 2014, Valaika is hitting .278 (98-for-352) with 21 doubles, 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 102 games with Iowa. He signed a minor league contract with an invite to major league spring training.

The Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.
