Cubs reinstate infielder Starlin Castro
Optioned infielder Logan Watkins to Triple-A Iowa
The Chicago Cubs today reinstated infielder Starlin Castro from the bereavement list. Infielder Logan Watkins was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Castro, 24, was placed on the bereavement list, August 21. He is batting .284 (141-for-496) with 31 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 64 RBI during his 2014 All-Star season. Castro's 13 home runs are one shy of his career high 14 home runs hit in 2012. He owns a .297 average (33-for-111) against left-handed pitchers and a .281 mark (108-for-385) against right-handed pitching.
Castro has recorded a .975 fielding percentage (13 E/524 TC) in 124 games at shortstop this season, and has committed just two errors in his last 55 games since June 18, good for a .991 fielding percentage (2 E/217 TC) in that stretch.
Since making his major league debut with Chicago in 2010, Castro has batted .283 (833-for-2,945) with 161 doubles, 29 triples, 50 home runs and 293 RBI in 731 games. He is a three-time National League All-Star, earning the honor in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
Watkins, who turns 25 on August 29, hit .300 (3-for-10) with a run, a double and three RBI in four games following his recall from Iowa, August 24. He is hitting .256 (81-for-316) with 20 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 38 RBI in 101 games with Iowa this year.
