Andrew Cashner of the San Diego Padres named National League Player of the Week

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Andrew Cashner has been named the National League Player of the Week for the week ending September 21st. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Cashner led the Majors with 17.0 innings pitched last week, while posting a perfect 2-0 record. The hard-throwing right-hander recorded a 1.06 ERA (2 ER/17.0 IP), while fanning 14 and walking just two during his two outings.

On Monday, Cashner blanked the Philadelphia Phillies for his second complete-game shutout of the season and third of his career in a 1-0 victory at Petco Park. The 27-year-old struck out seven Philadelphia batters and walked one while throwing just 92 pitches over 9.0 innings of work in the two-hit shutout. With the performance, Cashner became one of only four active pitchers to have thrown three or more complete-game shutouts within his first 50 career Major League starts (also: Derek Holland, TEX - 4; Jaime Garcia, STL - 3; and J.A. Happ, HOU - 3). The 92 pitches marked the second-lowest pitch count in a complete-game shutout by a Padres hurler, behind only Clay Hensley's 91 pitches in his complete-game shutout on May 14, 2006 at Chicago (NL). Cashner followed up the performance by hurling 8.0 innings in Saturday's contest against the NL West-rival San Francisco Giants, leading the Padres to a 3-2 victory at Petco Park en route to his fifth win of the season. The Texas native held the Giants to two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in the outing. With the win, Cashner improved to 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA (9 ER/42.0 IP) in six starts since returning from the disabled list on August 23rd. He extended his streak of 18 consecutive home starts in which he has held opponents to two-or-fewer runs. The streak, which dates back to June 11, 2013, is the second-longest among active big league pitchers behind Miami's Jose Fernandez (20), and is also a Padres franchise record. This is Cashner's first career weekly award.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Chris Coghlan (.462, 5 R, 12 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .808 SLG, .500 OBP) of the Chicago Cubs; Colorado's Michael Cuddyer (.429, 9 R, 9 H, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 1.095 SLG, .478 OBP), Wilin Rosario (.700, 8 R, 14 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 1.150 SLG, .714 OBP) and Rafael Ynoa (.478, 11 H, 4 2B, 7 RBI, .739 SLG, .478 OBP); Matt Kemp (.333, 7 R, 10 H, 3 HR, 10 RBI) and Yasiel Puig (.419, 12 R, 13 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 SB, .710 SLG, .471 OBP) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Jacob deGrom (1-1, 2.77 ERA, 23 SO, 13.0 IP) of the New York Mets; and Washington's Drew Storen (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 SV, 3.1 IP) and Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 12 SO, 14.0 IP).
