Laura Doanes named 2014 Rockies Hispanic Adult Leadership Award winner

In a pregame ceremony at Coors Field on Saturday, September 20, the Colorado Rockies named Laura Doanes as the 2014 Hispanic Adult Leadership Award winner. It is the twelfth year of the Colorado Rockies' commitment to recognizing hard-working individuals making a positive impact in the Hispanic community at a grassroots level. 

After immigrating to the United States at 25 years old, Laura learned first-hand the opportunities that education affords, and early on she was inspired to pursue nursing as a way to help others. While in nursing school, Laura was elected to serve as Secretary for the Colorado Student Nurses Association, tasked with providing a voice for Hispanic nurses and increasing awareness of medical needs for the Hispanic population. She currently serves as a tutor for Hispanic nursing students, as well as a mentor for Hispanic teenage girls at DPS's Florence Crittenton School. Actively involved in her church, Laura started a volunteer care network to help members of her congregation in need of home care, and is especially valuable as the only bilingual nurse at her church. Stemming from her love of the outdoors, she leads a weekly hiking group on the weekends, incorporating health-related discussions around topics that are relevant to the group. Laura has a passion for educating people in the community and making them aware of what they can do for themselves and their families, just as she has done for herself and her family.

At the September 20th ceremony, all four finalists were introduced to the crowd. Along with Laura were finalists Dana Wade representing finalist Dr. Ruby Martinez, Jamie Torres and Rosa Marie Vergil Garcia. Rockies Owner, Chairman and CEO Dick Monfort presented Ms. Doanes with her award, which was a personalized lamp designed and created by local artist, Hitu Parmar. (Attached is a photo of the actual lamp.) She also received 2015 Rockies Season Tickets, and her name will appear with the past eleven award winners on a plaque displayed at Coors Field.
