Jordan Ximmermann of the Washington Nationals named National League Player of the Week

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, who threw a no-hitter in yesterday's regular season finale against the Miami Marlins, has been named National League Player of the Week for the week ending September 28th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Zimmermann tossed his first career no-hitter and the first in Nationals history (since 2005) en route to a 1-0 victory over the Marlins at Nationals Park. The 28-year-old fanned 10 while walking only one in the outing, needing just 104 pitches (79 strikes) to earn his 14th victory of the season. Zimmermann became just the fifth pitcher in franchise (Montreal/Washington) history (since 1969) to throw a no-hitter, joining Dennis Martinez (July 28, 1991 at LAD), Charlie Lea (May 10, 1981 vs. SFG) and Bill Stoneman (October 2, 1972 vs. NYM and April 17, 1969 at PHI). He also joined Washington Senators hurlers Bobby Burke (August 9, 1931 vs. BOS) and Hall of Famer Walter Johnson (July 1, 1920 at BOS) as the only Major League pitchers to throw a no-hitter while in a Washington uniform. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the no-hitter was just the fifth thrown in a regular-season finale in Major League history - a feat that was accomplished most recently by Miami's Henderson Alvarez (2013), who was Zimmermann's counterpart on Sunday afternoon. Cincinnati's Bumpus Jones (1892) and California's (LAA) Mike Witt (1984) are the only other pitchers to have accomplished the feat themselves, while the Oakland Athletics had four pitchers (Vida Blue, Glenn Abbott, Paul Lindblad and Rollie Fingers) combine to pitch a no-hitter in their 1975 season finale. The performance was Zimmermann's second complete-game shutout of the season, tying a career high while his 10 strikeouts gave him a career-best 182 for the season. This is the second career weekly award for the Wisconsin native, who previously won earlier this season for the week of June 2nd-8th.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Carl Crawford (.500, 5 R, 7 H, HR, 3 RBI, .786 SLG, .563 OBP) and Zack Greinke (2-0, 2.08 ERA, 11 SO, 13.0 IP) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez (.389, 4 R, 7 H, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .833 SLG, .500 OBP); San Diego's Yasmani Grandal (.333, 5 R, 7 H, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .619 SLG, .483 OBP); Arizona's Ender Inciarte (.414, 12 H, 3 RBI, .414 OBP); Anthony Rizzo (.455, 10 H, 4 2B, HR, 4 RBI, .773 SLG, .556 OBP) of the Chicago Cubs; Miami's Alvarez (1-1, 0.61 ERA, 5 SO, 14.2 IP); and Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto (2-0, 1.13 ERA, 14 SO, 16.0 IP).
