2011's Most Popular Baseball Topics on Twitter

The St Louis Cardinals may have won the 2011 World Series. But, when it comes to social media, it is the AL champion Texas Rangers that will have the last laugh. According to data released by Twitter this week, the Rangers were the most-tweeted subject in baseball over the course of this last calendar year. Here are the top five, according to Twitter’s findings:

Texas Rangers

Bert Blyleven

Roberto Alomar

Vernon Wells

Justin Verlander

Fans took to Twitter last winter to make a case for, and then celebrate, the Hall of Fame inductions of both Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar. Blyleven, who won 287 games and posted a career ERA of 3.31, was elected to Cooperstown in his 15th and final season on the ballot. Alomar, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, was among the greatest offensive second baseman in MLB history, posting a .300 career batting average while slugging 210 home runs and collecting four Silver Sluggers. Each were deserving selections, and the fans echoed that sentiment on Twitter.

If 2010 was the Year of the Pitcher, then ’11 was the Year of the Verlander. The Tigers’ ace led the American League in all three pitching Triple Crown categories, threw a second career no-hitter, and took home both Cy Young and MVP honors.
