Happy Birthday to The United States of America

Sometimes it's easy to get lost in it all. We pack up the car and head to the lake or beach. We make last-minute runs to the market to get that extra pack of hot dog buns, bags of ice or charcoal for the cookouts. We fight traffic and deal with sunburned shoulders and the occasional temper tantrum from an overtired child. By the time the fireworks light up the sky, most of us are so exhausted that we forget to enjoy ourselves on the 4th of July.

As a kid I loved the 4th, mainly because I was on summer vacation and the whole day was one big party with friends and family. These days I enjoy it because it seems to be the one day that is cool to be patriotic. Imagine that. A day when we get a break from the snark and bickering. A day when we see that we all dress in the same clubhouse and put on the same jersey. A day when we know we are all, all of us, teammates.

So, this Independence Day let's all take some time out, even if it's just a few minutes, to enjoy being Americans. It can be frustrating at times and we don't alway agree but that's what makes us great and helps us grow. And I wouldn't want to play for any other team.

Happy Birthday, America, and Happy 4th of July to all of you.
