Being John Malkovich, Or At Least Dressing Like Him

When I think of John Malkovich, a scene from the movie Rounders immediately pops into my head. John’s character has just been bested by Matt Damon’s in a not-so-friendly game of poker and Malkovich orders, in a spot-on Russian accent, “Pay dat man his money.”

It can be said without hesitation that John Malkovich is a brilliant actor. He commands both stage and screen. From his days in Chicago’s legendary Steppenwolf Theatre Company, to Broadway, and on to his extremely successful movie career, Mr. Malkovich is the Jim Thome of the acting world. He is a great player and always seems to put up numbers and get the job done. How is John as a dresser? I have no earthly idea. He doesn’t strike me as someone who makes people stop and say, “Damn! That Malkovich has got style!”

As we have seen time and time again in Hollywood, many celebrities don’t necessarily need degrees to proclaim themselves as experts. They often take on projects or causes outside their “comfort zone” to prove they are more than what you see on the television or movie screens. Sometimes, I think it’s better to play the position you excel at and just enjoy that. Very few of us are Bo Jackson, after all.

Well it seems that soon we will all have a chance at “Being John Malkovich”…or at least dress like him . The versatile actor is, like so many before him, starting his own clothing line. I’ve been online since I read this story looking for images of John, to see if his choice in outfits warrants a line of men’s wear. In short…not so much.

I’m going to say that there will be one actor wearing John Malkovich on the red carpet at the next Oscars, and it will be, well, Jon Malkovich.
