Favorite Manager Poll

MOST POPULAR MANAGERS IN BASEBALL

In a poll recently conducted by Sports Illustrated, players chose Joe Maddon as the manager they'd most like to play for. No real surprise there, considering his players sing his praises constantly. He creates a fun, loose atmosphere that allows players to bond and feel comfortable. That atmosphere has been consistently conducive to winning, as evidenced by the level of success the Rays have achieved during Maddon's tenure in Tampa Bay.

The top 5 on the list were as follows:

5. Terry Francona

4. Jim Leyland

3. Mike Scioscia

2. Dusty Baker

1. Joe Maddon

I'm not surprised to see Dusty rated so high, as he has always been a "player’s manager.” He is a little easier on the guys, and is very cognizant of making his players comfortable. It could be argued that he breathed new life into the career of Scott Rolen. Mike Scioscia has been around for a long time, and as a former catcher, knows what it takes to succeed over the course of a grueling schedule. Leyland surprises me a bit, simply because he has always seemed to be an intense, fiery guy. But maybe the penchant for sticking up for his players is what got him on this list. Tito is another laid back guy, and all he does is win.

If I had my choice, I think I'd play for Maddon. It's an easy choice, considering I'm a big goofball, and I have the feeling that Maddon is too. Also, talking to James Shields, David Price, and BJ Upton, they have never had a bad word to say about the guy, and insist that his antics are not only helpful, but also necessary to maintaining team cohesiveness.
