Tribe places Cole (shoulder) on IL, recalls Wood
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Indians’ injured list has grown to 11.
When reliever A.J. Cole went to play catch prior to Saturday’s contest in Minnesota, the right-hander felt some pain in his shoulder, which prompted the club to place him on the 10-day IL with a right shoulder impingement. Cole will be examined further when the Indians get back to Cleveland on Monday.
“We talked to him and we said, ‘We can’t pitch a guy when he says his shoulder hurts,’” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “So we talked to him, talked to [Indians president of baseball operations] Chris [Antonetti], [general manager Mike Chernoff] and got Hunter Wood on his way.”
The Tribe was planning to have Wood activated Sunday, but with Saturday’s near two-hour rain delay and a rainy forecast, the team wanted to have another relief option just in case the game went late into the night. So, the Indians made the move before Wood even touched down in Minneapolis.
“Not until midnight,” Francona said of Wood’s arrival. “We were like, ‘Well, we’re not gonna pitch A.J. anyway,’ so we put Wood on last night just in case we had a rain delay and we would’ve played until one in the morning.”
Cole has made 25 relief appearances for the Tribe this season, posting a 3.81 ERA with 30 strikeouts and eight walks in 26 innings.
Wood has pitched three shutout innings for his new club after being traded to the Indians from the Rays on July 28, allowing two hits and three strikeouts.
Otero tosses another scoreless frame
After taking a few days off due to some shoulder pain, reliever Dan Otero has thrown three scoreless innings in his last three rehab appearances for Triple-A Columbus. On Saturday, he allowed one hit and walked one batter on 20 pitches.
“He came through good,” Francona said. “He’s supposed to pitch Tuesday, I think.”
