New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has been voted American League Rookie of the Month for April, and Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela has been voted National League Rookie of the Month for the first month of the 2017 season, it was announced earlier today on MLB Network.
Judge batted .303 (23-for-76) with 23 runs scored, a pair of doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, 20 RBI and one stolen base to claim his first career monthly award, becoming the first Yankees player to take home rookie honors since teammate Gary Sánchez last August. With a minimum of 20 at-bats, Aaron paced all Major League rookies in runs scored, home runs, RBI and slugging percentage (.750), while matching outfielder Mitch Haniger of the Seattle Mariners in walks (13).
On April 12th against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, Judge delivered his third consecutive multi-hit game, as well as his third home run in as many days. The 25-year-old became the third Yankee rookie in as many seasons to homer in at least three consecutive games, joining teammates Greg Bird (2015) and Sánchez (2016). In Friday night's tilt with the Baltimore Orioles, the 32nd overall selection in the 2013 MLB Draft recorded his first career multi-homer game. At 25 years, two days, Aaron became the youngest Yankee outfielder to homer twice in a contest since Melky Cabrera (24 years, 254 days) accomplished the feat on April 22, 2009 against the Oakland A's. Judge finished April tied with Oakland's slugging outfielder Khris Davis for the AL lead in home runs. His 10 homers this past month matched Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies (2016) and José Abreu of the Chicago White Sox (2014) for the most by a rookie in the month of April in MLB history. The Linden, California native became the youngest Yankee in club history to reach the 10-home run mark in March/April, and just the third player for the Yankees, joining Alex Rodriguez (14, 2007) and Graig Nettles (11, 1974). Judge also became just the second player in Yankees history age 25-or-younger to hit 10 homers in the team's first 22 games of a season, joining Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle (11 HR in 1956). Additionally, his 20 RBI through 22 team games were the most by a Yankees player age-25-or- younger since Bobby Murcer in 1969 (21 RBI). Led in large part by their young slugger, the Yankees currently own a 16-9 record (.640) and are tied with the Orioles for first in the competitive AL East.
Others receiving votes for AL Rookie of the Month included outfielders Haniger (.342, 20 R, 12 XBH, 16 RBI) of the Mariners and Andrew Benintendi (.333, 15 R, 4 2B, 14 RBI) of the Boston Red Sox.              
Senzatela compiled a 3-1 record with a 2.81 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 32.0 innings pitched in five starts en route to earning his first career monthly award. Antonio is the first Rockies player to win NL Rookie of the Month since teammate Story took home rookie honors last April, following his historic month. Across qualified Major League rookie starting pitchers, Senzatela finished the period first in ERA and innings pitched, tied for first in wins and tied for fourth in strikeouts.
On April 22nd against the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field, Senzatela delivered 7.0 innings of
one-run ball, striking out three and allowing just four hits without a walk. The Valencia, Venezuela native logged his third consecutive win of the season with the impressive outing. Antonio became the second Venezuelan pitcher to earn a win in three of his first four career starts, joining Jeanmar Gomez, who accomplished the feat for the Cleveland Indians in 2010. Colorado's promising young arm began his MLB career in grand fashion, compiling a 3-0 record to go along with a 2.08 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 26.0 innings pitched. During his sensational start to the season, Antonio held opponents to a .202 batting average and allowed just two round-trippers. Additionally, the 22-year-old posted three quality starts during his award-winning month and held opponents to three-or-fewer runs in four of his five starts. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Senzatela and fellow rookie teammate Kyle Freeland became the only two pitchers in Rockies history to earn three-or-more wins while maintaining an ERA below 3.00 within their first five career starts. Off to a fine start this season, the Rockies currently sit in second in the NL West with a 16-11 record (.593).
Others receiving votes for NL Rookie of the Month included Antonio's teammate Freeland (3-1, 2.93 ERA, 27.2 IP, 16 SO); outfielder Manuel Margot (14 R, 29 H, 5 2B, 8 RBI) of the San Diego Padres; catcher Manny Piña (.375, 8 R, 18 H, 6 2B) of the Milwaukee Brewers; reliever Carl Edwards Jr. (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 G, 13 SO) of the Chicago Cubs; outfielders Cody Bellinger (.286, .571 SLG, .375 OBP, 2 HR) and Andrew Toles (12 R, 17 H, 5 HR, 13 RBI) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; first baseman Josh Bell (9 R, 18 H, 6 XBH, 8 RBI) of the Pittsburgh Pirates; and outfielder José Martinez (.342, 6 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI) of the St. Louis Cardinals.
In recognition of their Rookie of the Month Awards, Aaron Judge and Antonio Senzatela will each receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for their accomplishments.
