Judge holding court on ballot, wants company

June 20th, 2017

NEW YORK -- Yankees phenom remains the American League's leading vote-getter for the All-Star Game, to be played on July 11 at Marlins Park in Miami, but a few of his teammates could use a boost if they are to join the rookie slugger at the Midsummer Classic.

Judge has tallied 2,631,284 votes through the fourth checkpoint, as announced on Tuesday by Major League Baseball, and is closing the gap on the Nationals' (2,827,330) for the highest vote total overall. Judge leads the Majors with 23 home runs and paces the AL with a .335 batting average entering play on Tuesday.

Joe DiMaggio (1936) and Hideki Matsui (2003) are the only previous Yankees rookies to start a Midsummer Classic. Judge has also been invited to take part in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby, something that he has expressed interest in, but he said on Tuesday that he has not committed to participating.

"I haven't decided yet," Judge said. "I'll think about it for a while. We'll see what we do. I just honestly haven't thought about it. I'm more focused on what I can do for the team right now."

Second baseman (1,450,472) held a lead at the first checkpoint, but he was overtaken by (2,185,035) of the Astros in the second week and continues to rank second at his position.

Designated hitter (927,247) -- a seven-time All-Star -- remains second to the Mariners' (1,118,873) among AL DHs.

Other Yankees with notable showings are Didi Gregorius (871,601, third among AL shortstops), (1,045,471, third among AL catchers and trailing former teammate by less than 6,000 votes), and (760,869, eighth among AL outfielders).
