Jones exits due to sore right shoulder
Center fielder doesn't expect issue will keep him out of lineup
NEW YORK -- Normally, Adam Jones would try to talk Orioles manager Buck Showalter out of removing him from the game, but that wasn't the case on Monday afternoon, when he exited an 8-6 loss to the Yankees in the middle of the eighth inning with the same right shoulder soreness that's been hampering him since June.
"I wanted to tell [Showalter to keep me in], but sometimes you just can't fight it, and normally I fight it. Probably 99 percent of the time," said Jones, who didn't look right on a throw to first base in the sixth inning. "This time just couldn't fight it."
Jones also grimaced as he walked to the visitors' dugout after he struck out to end the seventh inning.
"He's not going to say anything. I'm going to say something for him," Showalter said of Jones, who has managed to avoid the disabled list despite several nagging injuries. "He's never going to ask to come out of the ballgame, but I didn't like [how he looked]. … He didn't want to say anything. He's icing it down. His wrist was bothering him, too. Just thought it was best to get him out of there, and see where we are, if there's such a thing as a long recovery period, tomorrow."
Jones, who wasn't slated for any tests, seemed fairly certain he would play in Tuesday night's game, as the All-Star prides himself on posting up and being in the starting lineup.
"Am I going to play tomorrow? Yeah. What else am I going to do? If I don't play I just sit here and eat ice cream and bother Buck," he said. "So, probably try to get some rest tonight and hopefully it responds, feels better tomorrow."
