Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals voted National League Pitcher of the Month for June

Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals has been voted the National League Pitcher of
the Month for the month of June.

Wainwright posted a 4-2 record for the month, leading the Majors with 45.2 innings pitched and tying for the
N.L. lead in wins. The right-hander allowed just nine earned runs in his six outings, posting a 1.77 ERA, which was the fourth-lowest mark among qualifying N.L. starters. Wainwright fanned 40 during the month, which was tied for the League's fifth-highest total. He allowed just six free passes and opposing batters hit just .220 against him.

On Saturday, June 29th, Wainwright allowed just a single earned run over 9.0 innings of work while striking out eight in a 7-1 victory at Oakland. The Cards' ace needed just 112 pitches to dispatch the Athletics in what was his fourth complete game of the season and second during the month of June. Wainwright went 6.2 innings in his June 23rd start against Texas, allowing just two runs (one earned), but took the loss as the Cards fell to the Rangers, 2-1.

The veteran of seven big league seasons notched his 1,000th career strikeout on June 13th, one of six he recorded on the day in a 7.0-inning, 2-1 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field. Wainwright held the Mets to just four hits and walked two en route to his 10th win of the season, becoming the fastest N.L. hurler to reach double-digit wins this season. The 2010 N.L. All-Star also tossed 7.0 innings in his June 7th start at Cincinnati, scattering seven hits and holding the Reds offense to two runs to earn the win. Wainwright opened the month of June with his second doubledigit strikeout performance of the season, fanning 10 without issuing a walk while allowing just one run in 9.0 innings of work as the Cardinals took a 7-1 decision over the visiting San Francisco Giants. This is the first career monthly award for Wainwright and the first Pitcher of the Month honor for a Cardinals hurler since Chris Carpenter won for August 2009.

Other pitchers receiving votes included Washington's Jordan Zimmermann (3-0, 2.06 ERA, 31 SO, 35.0 IP) and Gio Gonzalez (2-0, 1.79 ERA, 44 SO, 40.1 IP); Cincinnati's Mike Leake (3-1, 1.76 ERA, 22 SO, 41.0 IP); Miami's Jose Fernandez (2-1, 1.67 ERA, 32 SO, 32.1 IP) and Steve Cishek (1-0, 9 SV, 0.75 ERA, 12 SO, 12.0 IP); Atlanta's Kris Medlen (4-1, 2.14 ERA, 28 SO, 33.2 IP) and Craig Kimbrel (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 SV, 13 SO, 10.0 IP); Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin (4-0, 3.15 ERA, 17 SO, 40.0 IP); and Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole (4-0, 3.70 ERA, 11 SO, 24.1 IP) and Jeff Locke (2-0, 1.67 ERA, 25 SO, 32.1 IP).
