SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez advanced his fifth-starter candidacy with five scoreless innings, while Texas clubbed five homers -- four off Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani -- in a 12-5 victory on Thursday afternoon.
Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, in his fourth game since returning from left hip surgery, had a double in three at-bats and is 4-for-9 so far this spring. He has two doubles and two home runs.

Gonzalez allowed just one hit, a double by third baseman Eugenio Suarez. He walked three, struck out two and threw 72 pitches. Using his power sinker, Gonzalez recorded nine outs via ground balls, including a double play.

"I was finally able to do what I've been preaching," Gonzalez said. "Thow strikes, quality strikes, get ahead and I got a couple of punchouts. It gives me confidence I have the answers when I'm doing bad. I was down in the zone, that was the key."
Gonzalez outpitched DeSclafani, who allowed eight runs in 5 2/3 innings. He gave up home runs to Adrian Beltre, Justin Ruggiano -- who hit two off DeSclafani -- and Mitch Moreland. The right-hander has allowed 18 runs in his last 17 innings.

"I don't know how to describe this outing," DeSclafani said. "I felt good. I felt like I had everything working. ... I've been trying to do a bunch of things this Spring Training as far as throwing different pitches in different counts. Stuff like that."
Ronald Guzman added an impressive three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh off Jumbo Diaz, his first of the spring.

Up next for the Reds: The Reds will be back at Goodyear Ballpark on Friday to face the Rockies in a 4:05 p.m. ET start, live on MLB.TV.Raisel Iglesias will start against Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa. Manager Bryan Price said he expects Brandon Phillips back in the lineup after missing three games with a sore neck. Phillips, Joey Votto and Jay Bruce all had a scheduled off-day on Thursday.
Up next for Rangers: Left-hander Cole Hamels will start against the Padres at 8:05 p.m. CT on Friday in Surprise. The Rangers announced on Wednesday that Hamels will be their Opening Day starter and has two starts left in Spring Training.
