ARLINGTON -- Third baseman Adrian Beltre was not available to the Rangers for their game against the Mets on Wednesday night.
Beltre was examined by Dr. Keith Meister, who confirmed the original diagnosis of a sprained left ankle. Beltre is considered day to day, but the Rangers are planning to call up infielder Jurickson Profar from Triple-A Round Rock in preparation for the possibility of putting Beltre on the disabled list. An official decision has not been made. Beltre left Tuesday's game in the sixth inning after jamming the ankle by landing awkwardly on first base in the first inning.

"I know he is still pretty sore today," manager Jeff Banister said. "He came in today and got treatment. We'll see where he is at and have the doctor look at him. Right now it's how he feels: he's sore and not available."
That left the Rangers short-handed in terms of position players Wednesday. Ryan Rua started at first base on Wednesday with Joey Gallo moving back to third. With Robinson Chirinos starting at catcher, the only two healthy players on the bench were Jonathan Lucroy and utility infielder Pete Kozma.
"It's frustrating," shortstop Elvis Andrus said. "Not being able to play through it is tough. It's a bad situation for him and for us as a team. The main thing is for him to get healthy. That's what we all want."
The Rangers have 13 pitchers and elected not make a move for another position player such as Triple-A utility infielder Drew Robinson. Dillon Gee remains with the Rangers despite throwing 83 pitches and allowing four runs in 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday night.
"We considered all our options," Banister said.
The Rangers' unsettled rotation may require holding tight to all their pitching options. Only three of five spots in the rotation are taken with Cole Hamels, A.J. Griffin and Tyson Ross on the disabled list.
Andrew Cashner and Martin Perez are scheduled to pitch Friday and Saturday against the Nationals in Washington, but the Rangers are undecided for Sunday. Nick Martinez and Austin Bibens-Dirkx are two candidates.
Yu Darvish is scheduled to pitch Monday against the Astros, but the Rangers are undecided for Tuesday. Gee is a possibility for that game as are Martinez and Bibens-Dirkx, but it all depends on who is needed out of the bullpen before then.
The Rangers would like more position player depth by Friday night. The Rangers will be playing under National League rules with no designated hitter, which means they will need pinch-hitters off the bench.
"In a perfect world, that would be nice," Banister said. "But things happen to take you out of a perfect world."
