A.J. Pollock of the Arizona Diamondbacks named National League Player of the Week

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock has been named the National League Player of the Week for the week ending June 1, 2014. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In six games last week, Pollock led the Majors in hitting, posting a .522 batting average (12-for-23). The 26-year-old also led the N.L. with a .593 on-base percentage, 23 total bases, nine runs scored and six doubles, and was tied for the league lead in hits and slugging percentage (1.000). Pollock collected four RBI and swiped two bases last week before being hit by a pitch and suffering a fractured right hand in Saturday night's contest against the Cincinnati Reds.

On Friday, Pollock went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in a 6-4 loss to the visiting Reds. The three-hit effort was his third of the week and team-leading seventh of the season. It came on the heels of Thursday's 2-for-4 performance in which the right-handed-hitting slugger clubbed a double and a triple while scoring a pair of runs in a 4-0 victory over Cincinnati. The Hebron, Connecticut native helped the D-backs power their way to a 12-6 win over the N.L. West division rival San Diego Padres on Wednesday, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two doubles and two RBI. Pollock also collected three hits in Monday's contest between the two clubs, including two doubles and his first career walk-off homer. The two-out, two-run blast in the bottom of the ninth, which was his sixth home run of the year, gave the D-backs a 7-5 win. This is the second career weekly award, and the second in the last three weeks, for the Notre Dame product, who was a first round selection (17th overall) in the 2009 MLB Draft. He also earned co-N.L. Player of the Week honors for the week of May 12th-18th, sharing the honor with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Milwaukee's Ryan Braun (.435, 6 R, 10 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .826 SLG, .500 OBP), Khris Davis (.455, 8 R, 10 H, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1.000 SLG, .520 OBP) and Kyle Lohse (1-0, 2.30 ERA, CG, SHO, 11 SO, 15.2 IP); Lucas Duda (.318, 6 R, 7 H, 3 HR, 7 RBI, .818 SLG, .464 OBP) of the New York Mets; Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (4 HR, 14 RBI, .645 SLG) and Carlos Ruiz (.444, 12 H, 3 2B, .500 OBP); Cincinnati's Aroldis Chapman (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 SV, 6 SO, 3.0 IP); Pittsburgh's Jason Grilli (0-0, 2.25 ERA, 3 SV, 7 SO, 4.0 IP); San Francisco's Tim Hudson (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 SO, 14.0 IP); and San Diego's Huston Street (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 SV, 2 SO, 3.0 IP).

In recognition of his National League Player of the Week Award, A.J. Pollock will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
