TEMPE, Ariz. -- Angels slugger Jose Pujols ran the bases for the first time this spring Monday and is on track to see Cactus League action later this week, manager Mike Scioscia said.
"Albert ran great," Scioscia said after a 13-0 loss to the Cubs. "He came out of it great, really ran well. He's approaching readiness to play in games."
Pujols, 37, underwent foot surgery in December to release his right plantar fascia. He has already been taking batting practice and participating in defensive drills. He remains questionable for Opening Day, but the Angels have been pleased with the progress he's made in his rehab.
Pujols batted .268 with 31 home runs and 119 RBIs in 152 games for the Angels in 2016.
• Left fielder Cameron Maybin was slated to start in left field Monday, but he was scratched with minor right shoulder fatigue. Maybin has served as the designated hitter in his past two Cactus League games because of the same issue.
"He was going to play left field, came out, thought his arm could use one more day," Scioscia said. "He'll get treatment today, throw a little bit [Tuesday] and hopefully be ready Wednesday or Thursday for left field."
• Outfielder Ryan LaMarre, who missed five games while dealing with a tweaked hip flexor, returned to action, going 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored in the ninth.
• Eight Angels pitchers combined to throw 206 pitches against the Cubs, Scioscia said. Right-hander Alex Meyer had a particularly forgettable day, facing eight batters and recording two outs in the fifth. Meyer, who is in the running for the fifth spot in the Halos' rotation, allowed three runs on two extra-base hits and issued four walks.
"We're going to go back and look at the tape and evaluate some of the guys that had issues, like Alex Meyer and some other guys, getting the ball over the plate and hopefully learn from it and make some adjustments," Scioscia said. "Whether it's the pitcher-catcher relationship that was getting a little bit off, or he just wasn't getting the right visual, or it was something mechanical. But he's certainly got to make some adjustments in-game, and he wasn't able to do that this afternoon."
