Alburquerque named Tigers Rookie of the Year

Detroit Sports Broadcasters' Association Tabs Pitcher as Tigers Top Rookie

DETROIT - Detroit Tigers pitcher Al Alburquerque was named the Tigers Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters' Association today.

Alburquerque finished the season with a 6-1 record and 1.87 ERA (43.1IP/9ER) in 41 outings with the Tigers. He led all American League relievers with a .142 batting average against, 4.36 hits per nine innings and 13.92 strikeouts per nine innings, while he was tied for third with six wins. His 13.92 strikeouts per nine innings were the most by a Tigers reliever since at least 1946, while his .142 batting average against and 4.36 hits per nine innings were the lowest by a Tigers reliever since at least 1946.

Alburquerque will be presented with his award prior to a Tigers home game during the 2012 season. The Detroit Sports Broadcasters' Association has been selecting a Tigers Rookie of the Year since 1969.
